A plea for a British manufacturer to produce a curved retractable system led Giles to look afresh at how retractables were traditionally built. Experience with traditional installed units showed a tendency for them to move and deflect under normal loads, with a 'temporary' and 'cheap' feel to most of them.
After pushing a pencil around for a day or two - the penny dropped - and by having nesting A frame trestles instead of the vertical 'legs' that other systems have (which they then have to brace - to stop them from falling over...) you could then have a system that started off being fundamentally stable.... and so APACK was born.

It was then a matter of introducing curved decks to sit on top of skewed APACK frames (curved decks and beams can be surprisingly problematic to get sufficiently strong) - but the end result was the UK's first curved retractable seating system, of which we are justifiably proud.

Like all good ideas, it is obvious once you see it!
